Chronic Stress & Autoimmune Disorders
When Chronic Illness Affects Both Body And Mind
We provide trauma-informed therapy for autoimmune disorders in Calgary that integrates mental and physical health, helping you address the psychological roots of chronic stress while supporting your overall healing.
The Mind-Body Connection In Autoimmune Disease
Autoimmune diseases disproportionately affect women, with approximately 75–80% of diagnoses occurring in females (Fairweather & Rose, 2004). Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis have been linked not only to genetic and biological factors, but also to chronic stress and specific psychosocial patterns.
Research demonstrates that:
Long-term activation of the stress response system can dysregulate the immune system and contribute to inflammation (Chapman et al., 2004; Bower & Irwin, 2016).
Emotional suppression affects health outcomes. Patterns like self-silencing, difficulty setting boundaries, chronic caregiving stress, and putting others’ needs first have been associated with poorer health outcomes and greater disease burden (Pennebaker, 1997).
Adverse childhood experiences increase risk. The landmark ACE Study found a strong, graded relationship between early adversity and increased risk of chronic disease, mental health disorders, and immune dysregulation later in life (Felitti et al., 1998; Anda et al., 2006).
The nervous system plays a central role. Your nervous system regulates both emotional and physical responses. When it’s been chronically activated by stress or trauma, it can lead to dysregulation in hormonal, inflammatory, and immune systems. Symptoms often reflect adaptation, not dysfunction alone.
This doesn't mean your autoimmune condition is "all in your head." It means your mind and body are deeply connected—and addressing the psychological roots of chronic stress can be a powerful complement to your medical care.
We Can Help
Why EMDR Works For Chronic Illness
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most researched and effective trauma therapies available. It’s recommended by the World Health Organization and has been shown to help with both psychological and physical symptoms related to trauma and chronic stress (Shapiro, 2018; WHO, 2013).
For people with autoimmune disorders, EMDR helps:
- Process unresolved trauma stored in the nervous system
- Reduce emotional and physiological reactivity to stress
- Improve nervous system regulation and resilience
- Address both psychological symptoms (anxiety, depression) and stress-related physical concerns
- Decrease the chronic activation that contributes to inflammation and immune dysregulation
EMDR doesn’t replace medical treatment—it complements it by addressing the underlying nervous system patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.

How Therapy Supports Autoimmune Health
Reduce Chronic Stress
Many people with autoimmune conditions have lived in a state of hypervigilance, chronic worry, or ongoing strain for years. Therapy helps you regulate your stress response and create internal safety.
Process Trauma Stored In The Body
Trauma isn’t just a memory, it lives in your nervous system and affects how your body responds to stress. EMDR therapy helps reprocess traumatic experiences so they no longer trigger the same physical and emotional reactivity.
Address Emotional Suppression
If you’ve spent your life prioritizing others, avoiding conflict, or suppressing your own needs, therapy creates space to reconnect with yourself and establish healthier boundaries.
Navigate Grief
Living with an autoimmune condition often means grieving the life you had before, the body you once relied on, and the future you thought you’d have. Therapy provides a safe space to process that loss.
Integrate Mind & Body Awareness
Somatic and trauma-informed approaches help you tune into your body’s signals, recognize patterns, and build regulation skills that support both mental and physical health.

Questions About Auto-Immune Therapy
Will therapy cure my autoimmune condition?
No. Therapy is not a replacement for medical treatment, and we don’t claim to cure autoimmune disorders. However, research shows that addressing chronic stress, trauma, and nervous system dysregulation can support immune regulation, reduce inflammation, and improve overall quality of life. Many clients find that therapy helps reduce symptom flares, manage stress more effectively, and improve their relationship with their body and their illness.
Do I need to have a trauma history to benefit from this therapy?
Not necessarily. While many people with autoimmune conditions do have histories of trauma or adverse childhood experiences, therapy can also help if you’re dealing with the ongoing stress of chronic illness, burnout, emotional suppression, or difficulty regulating your nervous system.
How does EMDR help with physical symptoms?
EMDR targets unresolved trauma stored in the nervous system. When trauma is processed, the nervous system can shift out of chronic activation (fight-or-flight mode) and into a more regulated state. This can reduce stress-related inflammation, improve immune regulation, and decrease physical symptoms that are exacerbated by nervous system dysregulation.
Can therapy help if my doctors can't find anything wrong?
Yes. Many people experience stress-related physical symptoms that don’t show up on standard medical tests—or that fluctuate in ways that are hard to explain medically. A trauma-informed, mind-body approach can help you understand how your nervous system might be contributing to those symptoms and give you tools to regulate them.
