Chronic Pain Therapy in Calgary, AB
Healing the nervous system so pain doesn't control your life.
At Aura Psychology, we provide chronic pain therapy for adults living with ongoing pain that medical treatment alone hasn't resolved. We work with the nervous system, trauma, and mind-body connection to help pain feel more manageable and life feel more livable again.
When pain becomes a full-time job.
You’ve been to doctors. You’ve tried treatments, medications, physical therapy, and things that promised relief. Maybe some helped temporarily. Maybe nothing has worked. Now you’re managing pain the way you manage a job. It takes time, energy, and constant attention.
Pain isn’t just physical anymore. It’s changed how you move, work, socialize, and see yourself. You’ve had to grieve activities you used to enjoy. You’ve listened to people suggest it’s “all in your head” while simultaneously feeling very real in your body. You’re exhausted from the pain itself and from managing it.
Chronic pain isn’t a character flaw or weakness. It’s your nervous system in a state of protection that medical imaging often can’t explain.
Chronic pain therapy at Aura Psychology helps your nervous system shift out of constant protection mode so pain becomes less central to your life.
If you’re noticing:
- Pain that persists despite medical treatment or imaging that doesn't match the severity
- Constant tension, aching, or pain that travels or changes location
- Pain that worsens with stress, anxiety, or emotional upset
- Fear around movement or activities because of pain
- Disrupted sleep because of pain or the way you need to position your body
- Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy because of pain limitations
- Anxiety or depression that developed alongside chronic pain
- Difficulty explaining your pain to others who don't understand
- A pattern where your pain increases when life stress increases

Questions About Chronic Pain Therapy
How can therapy help chronic pain if the problem is physical?
Chronic pain involves both physical and nervous system components. While tissue damage may have started the pain, chronic pain is maintained by nervous system sensitivity, stress responses, fear patterns, and how your brain processes pain signals.
Research shows that when you address the nervous system through therapy, manage stress and trauma, and change your relationship to pain, pain often becomes significantly more manageable. This doesn’t mean it’s “all in your head.” It means your mind and nervous system have real power to influence how much you hurt. Therapy taps into that power.
Will therapy mean I have to "accept" my pain and give up on improvement?
No. Acceptance in chronic pain therapy doesn’t mean resignation or giving up. It means acknowledging the pain as real while not letting it define your entire life. It means shifting from fighting pain to living alongside it. You can accept that you have chronic pain and still work to reduce it, manage it, and do things that matter to you despite it.
Many clients find that paradoxically, when they stop fighting pain so hard, their nervous system actually settles and pain becomes less intense.
What if my doctors say the pain is psychological?
This can feel dismissive and invalidating. But “psychological” doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real. It means your mind and nervous system are involved in how the pain is being created and maintained. This is actually good news, because it’s an area where therapy can help.
Pain involves your whole system. Physical factors, nervous system sensitivity, stress, emotions, beliefs, and past experiences all contribute. Addressing these components is valid medical care, not dismissal of your real pain.
Can therapy help if I'm still on pain medication?
How long does chronic pain therapy take?
Chronic pain therapy is ongoing work. Many clients notice meaningful changes within the first few months, like better sleep, less anxiety about pain, or more capacity to do activities. Deeper change in how you relate to and manage pain usually happens over six months to a year or longer.
We’ll discuss realistic timelines during your first consultation based on how long you’ve had pain, what’s contributing to it, and your specific goals.
