Couples Therapy in Calgary, AB
Therapy that helps you tune into each other with more harmony, compassion, and ease.
At Aura Psychology, we support partners who still care deeply but feel worn down by conflict, distance, or silence. We link emotional and physical stress, so change is something you feel in your bodies, your home, and your everyday life together. Couples counselling is available in Calgary & online across AB, QC, NS, & NU.
When love feels heavier than it used to.
Life hasn’t slowed down. Work, parenting, health changes, and midlife responsibilities keep stacking up, and somewhere along the way, things between you started to feel strained. Small things turn into big arguments, repairs don’t quite land, or you move through the day thinking, “It shouldn’t be this hard to love each other.”
Underneath the tension, there’s usually something softer: care, fear, and a wish to feel close again.
At Aura Psychology in Calgary, couples therapy helps you ease the pressure in your nervous systems and turn caring into closeness you can truly feel again.

What Couples Therapy Can Do For Your Relationship
Most couples don’t come to therapy because they’ve stopped caring. They come because they’re tired of feeling stuck, unheard, or betrayed. You may have tried talking it out, keeping the peace, or just “getting on with it,” only to end up back in the same place.
Couples therapy at Aura Psychology is time set aside for your relationship. We’re not here to take sides. We’re here to understand your patterns and help you both step out of them together, including therapy for neurodivergent couples.
In session, we pay attention to how conflict starts, escalates, and ends, what your nervous systems do under stress, how past experiences, blended family dynamics, or health stress shape today’s reactions, and what each of you needs to feel safe, heard, and valued.
Because insight alone rarely shifts long-standing patterns, we integrate relationship science and mind–body care throughout therapy. Depending on your goals, your work with us may include Gottman Method™ Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), EMDR for couples, and mindfulness-based approaches to help each of you stay grounded and present.
Over time, couples therapy helps partners move out of crisis mode and into a steadier rhythm of living, where the relationship feels revitalized.

Relationship Concerns We Support In Couples Therapy
Communication breakdowns
Recurring arguments or shutdowns can feel like a loop you can’t get out of. We help you step out of talking in circles and into calmer, clearer conversations where you both feel heard.
Emotional disconnection
Feeling lonely, unseen, or unsupported in the relationship can create a quiet drift between you. We help you name what’s missing and rebuild moments of warmth, curiosity, and genuine connection.
Trust issues & betrayal recovery
After lies, secrecy, or betrayal, everything can feel shaky. We help you slow things down, rebuild safety and honesty, and decide what repair looks like for both of you.
Life transitions
Becoming parents, relocating, an empty nest, or midlife shifts can be a lot to hold. We help you make sense of how they’ve affected the way you relate to yourself, others, and your life.
Conflict management
In therapy for couples, you’ll learn how to repair after conflict, so disagreements don’t escalate, linger for days, or turn into quiet resentment.
Attachment wounds
Old fears of abandonment, control, or withdrawal can pull you into the same painful patterns. We help you understand where these come from and respond to each other with more security, care, and steadiness.
Intimacy concerns
Desire differences, pain, stress, or medical issues can all affect closeness. In couples therapy, we address emotional, physical, or sexual disconnect so closeness feels safer, more natural, and less pressured.
Parenting & co-parenting challenges
When family life leaves you worn thin, we help you find common ground when you have different values, expectations, or approaches to parenting, co-parenting. and blended families.
Trauma’s impact on relationships
Therapy is a space to help you understand how unresolved trauma or chronic stress in one or both partners affects safety, trust, and connection.
Health, pain, or mental health stressors
We support you in adjusting to illness, burnout, or mental health concerns together, so the relationship becomes a source of support, not strain.

Mind–Body Approaches We Use In Couples Therapy
At Aura Psychology, our couples therapists blend therapy & psychology with a modern, integrative lens. We pay attention to how stress, hurt, and hope show up in your bodies, your nervous systems, and the way you reach for (or pull away from) each other.
Gottman Method™ Couples Therapy
Gottman Method™ Couples Therapy is a research-based approach that helps partners reduce conflict, improve communication, and strengthen friendship and intimacy. Together, you’ll learn to recognize negative cycles, repair after missteps, rebuild trust, and foster a more steady, lasting emotional connection.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples
EFT is grounded in attachment science and focuses on the emotional needs and fears underneath your patterns. Through guided conversations, partners move from defensiveness and blame toward empathy, vulnerability, and a safer, more secure bond.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) for Couples
EMDR is a structured approach used to process relational trauma, betrayal, and emotionally charged memories that keep you stuck. By working at a nervous-system level, EMDR helps reduce reactivity and triggers, so you can stay more present, connected, and open with each other.
Trauma-Informed and Attachment-Based Work
EMDR couples therapy recognizes that emotional injuries often live in the body and show up in how you relate. We help partners regulate stress responses, rebuild trust, and feel safer being open and vulnerable with one another.
Mindfulness & Regulation Tools
These tools use gentle, body-based strategies to help you notice what’s happening inside in the moment. They help reduce stress, support calmer communication, and develop more emotional presence during everyday interactions and difficult conversations.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) & Communication Skills Integration
CBT provides practical tools for spotting unhelpful thought patterns, managing triggers, and shifting the way you respond. Over time, CBT, along with communication skills integration, supports empathy, teamwork, and more effective dialogue when it matters most.
It’s time to turn tension into connection.

Questions About Couples Therapy
How do we know if we need couples therapy?
Couples Therapy isn’t only for relationships in crisis; it’s for any couple who feels stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward. You might find yourselves repeating the same arguments, avoiding difficult conversations, or feeling distant even when you love each other deeply.
If you’re saying things like “we can’t communicate anymore” or “we’ve lost our spark,” couples or marriage counselling in Calgary can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface and reconnect in healthy, lasting ways. Many couples tell us they wish they had come sooner, when the first signs of disconnection appeared, not after years of stress.
What can we expect from the couples therapy process?
At Aura Psychology, the process is structured, collaborative, and evidence-based. It begins with a free 15-minute consultation with a couples therapist in Calgary, followed by a Relationship Assessment (including the Gottman Relationship Checkup).
Each partner then attends an individual session to explore their personal experience before coming together for a goal-setting session and the start of therapy. Sessions draw from Gottman Method™ Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and EMDR for couples when trauma or past experiences affect connection.
After about three months, we complete a progress check-up to review growth and update goals. The process is structured but warm, creating space for safety, clarity, and real change.
Will we need to talk about the past?
Yes, but not to assign blame. We explore the past only to understand how it continues to shape the present. Many couples find that old emotional injuries, betrayals, or unspoken pain keep reappearing in today’s conflicts.
By processing these experiences (sometimes with EMDR or trauma-informed, attachment-based tools), partners can release old triggers, rebuild trust, and communicate more openly without repeating the same cycle. The focus is on understanding and healing, not reliving or judging.
What if one of us isn’t sure about coming to therapy?
It’s completely normal for one partner to feel hesitant or unsure. Couples therapy works best when both people feel safe, respected, and not blamed.
In the first few couples therapy sessions in Calgary, we take time to understand each partner’s perspective with no pressure, no taking sides, and no assigning fault.
The goal is to build trust and curiosity about your relationship, not to force agreement. Many hesitant partners find therapy far less intimidating and far more helpful once they experience the supportive, non-judgemental environment.
How long does it take to see results?
Every couple is unique, but most begin to notice small, meaningful changes within the first few sessions, such as less reactivity, calmer conversations, or a sense of hope returning. For deeper or long-standing issues, meaningful progress often happens over 3–6 months, depending on commitment and consistency.
We also complete a 3-month relationship check-in using the Gottman Relationship Checkup to track progress and refine goals.
The intention isn’t just to stop fighting. It’s to help you understand each other, repair effectively, and feel like a team again.
