Hypnotherapy Calgary

You Can Take Back Control

Some habits feel impossible to break on your own - no matter how much willpower you throw at them. Hypnotherapy works differently. Instead of fighting against your subconscious mind, it works with it, helping you rewire the patterns that keep you stuck.

It's Not Magic - It's Neuroscience

You’ve tried everything. The patches, the apps, the sheer willpower – and somehow, you’re still stuck in the same pattern. Hypnotherapy offers a different approach entirely. Instead of relying on conscious effort alone, it targets the subconscious drivers behind your behavior. At Aura Psychology, we help people break free from smoking, anxiety, unwanted eating patterns, and more by working with the part of your brain where real change happens.

We use evidence-based hypnotherapy to help clients make real, lasting changes - whether that's quitting smoking, managing anxiety, or finally losing the weight that's been holding you back.

Why Work With Aura Psychology for Hypnotherapy?

At Aura Psychology, our approach addresses:

We work on changing your relationship with food at a deeper level: recognizing true hunger vs. emotional hunger, breaking the reward cycle, and building sustainable habits that feel natural instead of forced. For clients using GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic or Wegovy), hypnotherapy is the perfect complement – the medication reduces physical hunger and helps you lose weight initially, while hypnotherapy creates the mental and behavioral shifts that help you maintain that weight loss long after you stop the medication.

Quitting smoking isn’t just about willpower – it’s about rewiring the subconscious associations that make you reach for a cigarette without thinking. Hypnotherapy targets the automatic triggers, cravings, and habits that keep you smoking even when you consciously want to quit. We work with your mind to reduce physical cravings, break the ritual patterns (smoke breaks, after meals, stress relief), and reinforce your identity as a non-smoker.

Anxiety often lives in your body, not just your thoughts. You can understand logically that you’re safe, but your nervous system doesn’t believe it. Hypnotherapy helps retrain your body’s stress response, teaching your subconscious mind to react differently to triggers.

When your mind won’t shut off at night, telling yourself to “just relax” doesn’t work. Hypnotherapy helps retrain your brain to associate bed with sleep instead of anxiety, racing thoughts, or frustration. We address the subconscious patterns keeping you awake – whether that’s stress, hypervigilance, or conditioned insomnia where your body has learned to expect sleeplessness.

Questions About Hypnotherapy

You’re fully in control the entire time. Clinical hypnotherapy isn’t mind control – it’s guided focused attention. You’ll be aware of everything happening, you can speak, move, and stop the session at any point. You won’t do or say anything against your values or that you don’t want to do. Think of it like being deeply absorbed in a book or movie – focused and relaxed, but still completely yourself. Hypnosis simply helps you access the part of your mind where habits and automatic responses live, so we can work with them more effectively.

Most people describe it as deeply relaxed, calm, and focused – similar to that feeling right before you fall asleep, or when you’re so absorbed in something that time disappears. You’re not unconscious or asleep. You’ll hear everything I say, and you can respond and engage throughout. Some people feel heaviness in their body, others feel lightness. There’s no single “right” way to experience it. You’ll leave the session feeling refreshed, not groggy or disoriented.

It depends on what you’re working on. For focused goals like smoking cessation or a specific phobia, many clients see significant progress in 1-3 sessions. For more complex issues like anxiety management, chronic pain, or long-standing habits, 4-6 sessions is more typical. We’ll assess your specific situation during your first session and create a realistic plan together. Some people choose to continue occasional “maintenance” sessions, while others achieve their goal and move on.

Hypnotherapy is supported by decades of clinical research. It’s recognized by major medical organizations including the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association. That said, success depends on your motivation and openness to the process. If you’re genuinely ready to change and willing to engage with the work, hypnotherapy is a powerful tool. If you’re skeptical but curious, that’s fine – you don’t have to “believe” for it to work. But if you’re being forced into it or expect it to magically fix everything without effort, results will be limited.

In Alberta, anyone can call themselves a “hypnotherapist” – it’s not a regulated term. However, psychologists are regulated health professionals with years of clinical training and oversight by the College of Alberta Psychologists. When you see a psychologist who uses hypnotherapy (like at Aura Psychology), you’re getting someone with comprehensive mental health training who can assess whether hypnosis is the right approach for you, recognize contraindications, and integrate it with other evidence-based treatments if needed. It’s a higher level of clinical expertise and accountability.
