Intimacy Issues Therapy in Calgary, AB

Rebuilding closeness when connection feels distant or difficult.

We work with both individual and couples perspectives to help you rebuild physical and emotional closeness.

When closeness feels complicated or absent.

Sex used to feel good. Or maybe it never did. Now there’s distance between you and your partner that shows up most clearly in the bedroom. One of you wants it more. One of you feels pressured or touched out. Maybe you’re not interested anymore and you don’t know why. Maybe anxiety or shame makes intimacy feel impossible. Or maybe the connection is just gone and neither of you knows how to find it again. Intimacy issues rarely exist in isolation. They’re connected to stress, unresolved conflict, past experiences, how safe you feel in your body, and what sex means to you. Avoiding the conversation makes it bigger. Pushing through without addressing it makes resentment grow.

Intimacy therapy at Aura Psychology helps you understand what's underneath the distance.

If You're Noticing:

Intimacy involves your whole self. Body, emotions, beliefs, past experiences, current stress, and the safety you feel with your partner all shape what’s possible. Therapy addresses all of these.

Why Work With Aura Psychology for Intimacy Counselling?

At Aura Psychology, our approach is:

Sexual difficulty is rarely just about sex. It’s connected to how you feel about your body, your relationship, stress levels, past trauma, and what intimacy means to you. We look at the physical, emotional, psychological, and relational pieces so we understand what’s really happening underneath.
Many people with intimacy struggles carry shame, past trauma, or experiences where sexuality wasn’t safe or respected. We create a judgment-free space where you can talk about sex without embarrassment. Healing shame and processing trauma opens pathways to connection that were previously blocked.
Sometimes both partners need to understand their own relationship to intimacy before you work together. Sometimes you need to work as a couple from the start. Sometimes individual therapy and couples therapy happen in parallel. We tailor the approach to what actually fits your situation.
We use research-backed approaches to help you talk about sex, understand desire, rebuild connection, and address anxiety or performance pressure. Real communication about intimacy often requires scaffolding and permission. We provide that.
There is no “normal” for intimacy. There’s what works for you. We never suggest what you should want or how often you should have sex. We help you figure out what you actually want and what feels good in your real relationship.

We help you move from avoiding intimacy to building the kind of closeness that feels authentic and good for both of you.

It's time to rebuild what matters.

Questions About Intimacy Therapy

Yes. Sexual difficulty or disconnection is one of the most common relationship challenges. Desire differences, communication difficulties, stress, and unresolved conflict all affect intimacy. If you’re experiencing it, you’re far from alone.
Sexual problems are rarely just about sex. They’re usually about connection, communication, stress, safety, and how you relate to each other. A couples therapist helps you understand what’s underneath the difficulty and rebuild the relational foundation that allows intimacy to flourish.

It’s harder, but not impossible. If one partner is reluctant, individual therapy can still be helpful. You can explore your own feelings, build communication skills, and create openness to the conversation. Sometimes one person shifting creates enough movement that the other person becomes willing to try couples work.

We always encourage both people to come, but we can work with what you have.

Individual therapy addresses sexual anxiety, shame, trauma, body image concerns, or difficulty with arousal that relates to your own history and nervous system rather than the relationship. Sometimes individual work needs to happen first. Sometimes individual and couples therapy happen together.

We’ll help you figure out what makes sense based on where the difficulty is actually coming from.

Sex therapy is a specific specialty focused on sexual function and techniques. What we provide is intimacy therapy, which addresses the emotional, relational, and psychological aspects of sexual connection. We work with communication, safety, desire, and the relationship context.
