Trauma Therapy In Calgary

Therapy that helps you move from survival mode to feeling safe, present, and whole again.

At Aura Psychology, we support people who carry the weight of experiences they can't quite shake. We understand that trauma isn't always obvious, and healing isn't linear.

When The Past Still Lives In Your Present

Trauma doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it shows up as hypervigilance, emotional numbness, or feeling disconnected from your body. You might be managing work, relationships, and daily life while carrying anxiety, shame, or physical symptoms that medical tests can’t explain.

You’ve probably tried to “move on” or “let it go,” but the harder you push, the more exhausted you feel. Somewhere underneath the coping strategies, there’s a nervous system that hasn’t felt truly safe in a long time.

At Aura Psychology in Calgary, trauma therapy helps you process what happened at the nervous system level, so you can finally feel grounded, regulated, and free to live your life fully.

What Trauma Therapy Can Do For Your Healing

Most people don’t come to trauma therapy because they want to relive the past. They come because the past is still affecting their present—and they’re ready to change that.

You may have tried traditional talk therapy, read self-help books, or worked hard to understand why you react the way you do, only to find that insight alone doesn’t shift the patterns.

Trauma therapy at Aura Psychology is different. We don’t just talk about what happened. We work with how trauma lives in your nervous system, your body, and the way you relate to yourself and others.

In session, we pay attention to how your nervous system responds under stress, what triggers bring you back to old fear or shutdown, how past experiences shape today’s reactions, and what you need to feel safe, regulated, and present.

Because trauma is stored in the body and nervous system, not just in conscious memory, we integrate trauma-informed and body-based care throughout therapy. Depending on your goals, your work with us may include EMDR therapy, somatic approaches, trauma-informed CBT, and mindfulness-based regulation tools.

Over time, trauma therapy helps you move out of survival mode and into a steadier rhythm of living, where you feel more like yourself again.

Trauma Experiences We Support In Trauma Therapy

Early abuse, neglect, or growing up in unpredictable environments can shape how you see yourself and the world. We help you process these experiences and rebuild a sense of safety and self-worth.

Healing from sexual abuse, assault, or boundary violations requires specialized, trauma-informed care. We create a safe space to process what happened and reclaim your sense of agency and wholeness.

Traumatic medical procedures, life-threatening illness, or childbirth trauma can leave lasting impacts on your nervous system. We help you process the fear and helplessness so you can feel safe in your body again.

Betrayal, infidelity, emotional abuse, or narcissistic relationships create deep wounds that affect trust and connection. We help you heal from relational trauma and build healthier patterns moving forward.

Traumatic loss, pregnancy loss, or complicated grief can feel overwhelming. We help you process the pain and find a way to hold both your grief and your capacity to live fully.

Car accidents, workplace injuries, or near-death experiences can leave you feeling shaken and unsafe. We help you reprocess the trauma so you can move forward without constant fear or hypervigilance.

What To Expect

Mind–Body Approaches We Use In Trauma Therapy

At Aura Psychology, our trauma therapists blend therapy & psychology with a modern, integrative lens. We pay attention to how trauma shows up in your body, your nervous system, and the way you relate to yourself and the world.

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based approach used to process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge. By working at a nervous-system level, EMDR helps you release trauma from where it’s stored in your body, so you can stay more present, grounded, and open to life.

CBT provides practical tools for spotting unhelpful thought patterns shaped by trauma, managing triggers, and shifting the way you respond. Over time, trauma-informed CBT helps you challenge beliefs like “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault” and build healthier ways of thinking and coping.

Trauma lives in the body. Somatic therapy helps you reconnect with your body’s signals, release stored tension, and build the capacity to feel safe in your own skin. This work includes noticing physical sensations, grounding techniques, breathwork, and nervous system regulation.

EFT is grounded in attachment science and focuses on the emotional needs and fears underneath your patterns. Through guided exploration, you move from self-blame and disconnection toward self-compassion, emotional safety, and a more secure relationship with yourself.

Bonding, love and coffee with mature couple on sofa for relax, marriage and romance. Happiness, calm and health with people drinking in living room of home for tea, communication and comfort together

It's time to move from surviving to living.

Questions About Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy isn’t only for people with diagnosed PTSD; it’s for anyone whose past experiences are still affecting their present life. You might find yourself feeling anxious, numb, or hypervigilant, avoiding certain people or situations, struggling with relationships or trust, or experiencing physical symptoms without clear medical causes.

If you’re saying things like “I can’t seem to move past this” or “I don’t feel like myself anymore,” trauma therapy in Calgary can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface and process it at the nervous system level. Many clients tell us they wish they had come sooner, when the first signs of disconnection or overwhelm appeared.

The pace is completely individualized. Some clients are ready for trauma processing quickly, while others need more time building stability first. The goal is healing that feels sustainable, not retraumatizing.

Not necessarily. With EMDR, you don’t have to describe the trauma extensively. You focus on the memory briefly while your brain does the processing work through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds). Some clients find it helpful to share their story, while others prefer to work more somatically or keep details private.

That’s completely normal. Trauma can fragment memory, and some experiences may be partially or fully blocked. You don’t need to remember every detail to heal. We can work with what you do remember, or focus on current symptoms and nervous system regulation if memory gaps are present.

Every person is unique, but most begin to notice meaningful changes within the first few months—less reactivity, better sleep, feeling more present, or relationships starting to feel easier. For single-incident trauma (like a car accident), significant progress often happens within 6-12 EMDR sessions.

For complex trauma (childhood abuse, ongoing relational trauma, multiple traumatic events), healing typically requires longer-term work—often 6 months to 2 years. We’ll discuss a realistic timeline during your initial assessment and adjust as needed.
